Hanna Haring is a scientific illustrator, ecologist, and passionate advocate for nature conservation and communication.
"With my illustrations, I aim to depict the complexity, beauty, and diversity I see in nature. My goal is to make sometimes invisible processes and interactions understandable to a broader audience." Growing up around dunes, forests, and the North Sea, I learned a lot about nature. I learned about birds, plants, mushrooms, and insects. I learned to recognize species while volunteering at a Dutch youth nature association (JNM - Jeugdbond voor Natuur- en Milieustudie). Over the course of 10 years, I studied almost all species groups in the Netherlands and traveled throughout Europe and beyond to observe wildlife. This perfectly complemented my studies for a Bachelor Biology at the University of Amsterdam, where I spent most of my time in the field, searching for all kinds of species and learning to identify them. During this time, my passion for painting and drawing continued to grow, as did my understanding of the importance of science education and communication. It became a lifelong ambition to combine these two worlds. After getting my BSc in Biology, I pursued my dream in illustration and did a Master in Scientific Illustration at ZUYD Maastricht. There, I learned about visual storytelling and how to connect your target audience with the subject. Creating the perfect illustration requires not only artistic skills but, more importantly, a deep understanding of the story that needs to be told. Surrounded by the beautiful nature in Zuid-Limburg, I learned to merge these two worlds! Are you in need of illustrations for your publication, poster, or communication material?
